Tell me why there are 12 stars on the European flag

The European flag consists of a circle of 12 golden stars on a blue background.

It is the emblem of Europe.

It was first used by the Council of Europe
and was intended to represent Europe as soon as 1955.

Blue represents the sky.
The circle is symbol of unity.
The stars represent the peoples of Europe.
The number is set at 12 because 12 is symbol of perfection.
Just like the 12 signs of the zodiac which represent the universe.
